Below is a list of services provided by local community agencies and veteran’s service organizations to assist individuals with improving access to VA care. While the list is reviewed periodically in an effort to maintain current information, it is subject to change without notice. Also, to ensure optimal assistance, please provide these agencies with sufficient notice of your transportation need. 

 

Philadelphia VA Medical Center

 

From the North

Follow I-95 South to exit 22 to merge onto I-676 West/US 30 West/Vine Street Expressway towards central Philadelphia. Take the exit onto I-76 East.  Take exit 346B off the Expressway for Greys Ferry and University Avenue. Go straight down exit ramp, staying towards the right.  Follow road under railroad bridge, and stay on road as it curves around to the right.  Driveway entrance to Medical Center is at the third light up S. University Avenue.  Turn left into Medical Center entrance.

From the South

Follow I-95 North past the Philadelphia International Airport to Exit 13 (To I-76 West/291-Valley Forge). Continue following signs for I-76 West/Valley Forge. Cross Platt Bridge, and at the bottom of the bridge turn left onto 26th Street (following signs for I-76 West). Merge onto I-76 West (also known as the Schuylkill Expressway) and move cautiously to the far right lane.  Exit at 346B for University Ave/Civic Center. Continue straight off the ramp onto 34th Street.  Follow road until the seventh traffic light, and turn left into VA Medical Center main entrance.

From the South West

Take Baltimore Pike (Rt. 13) East through West Philadelphia and turn right at Baltimore Avenue. Turn left at light onto Woodland Avenue and right at next light onto University Avenue. Turn right into Medical Center main entrance.

From the East-New Jersey

Cross the Walt Whitman Bridge (I-76 West). After paying toll, follow signs for I-76 West (Schuylkill Expressway). Take Exit 346B for University Ave/Civic Center. Continue straight off the ramp onto 34th Street.  Follow road until the seventh traffic light, and turn left into VA Medical Center main entrance

From the West and North West

Take I-476 South or I-276 (PA Turnpike) East to I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) East towards Philadelphia. Take Exit 346B off the Expressway for Greys Ferry and University Avenue. Go straight down exit ramp, staying towards the right.  Follow road under railroad bridge, and stay on road as it curves around to the right.  Driveway entrance to Medical Center is at the third light up S. University Avenue.  Turn left into Medical Center entrance.

From Downtown Philadelphia

Take Market, Walnut or South/Spruce Streets West to 38th Street. Turn LEFT onto 38th Street. Medical Center is straight ahead down 38th Street. At the traffic light in front of entrance, turn RIGHT into VA Medical Center main entrance.

Public Transportation

 

Philadelphia VA Medical Center is located on the corner of Woodland and University Avenues and 38th Street in West Philadelphia.

  • The number 30 and 42 buses stop in front of the VA Medical Center.
  • All subway surface cars to and from 30th Street and Center City (EXCEPT TROLLEY #10) stop at 40th and Woodland Avenues, one block from the VA Medical Center.
  • City rapid transit stations are also located at 40th and Woodland, 40th and Market, and University City, which are within a walking distance to the VA Medical Center.
  • From 30th Street Station, take the LUCY (Loop around University City) bus.  Green line stops directly in front of the Medical Center, and Gold line stops across the street from the entrance.
